The image of the working mother…

I’ve been cracking myself up today while googling to find pictures to give to my lovely IT fairy in a Land Far Away who is building me a new blog theme (you know who you are!).  I was looking for a picture of a working mother or a woman juggling stuff … you know, to keep to the subject of the blog (balancing etc).  Anyway, don’t you just love the images of the working mother on the ‘net? How long do you think a baby will sit there quietly while her mother’s on the phone to a client?  Typing one handed is one thing but with a baby on your lap?  There was one picture of a serene looking mother in a white kitchen wearing a crisp white shirt and a baby on her hip, a bowl of cereal and a glass of orange juice next to a rather expensive looking laptop on the bench. Well, all I can say is that I hope she knows how to clean milk, cereal and orange juice out of her keyboard.

To be honest with you, I’d LOVE for it all to look like that.  Is it realistic?  I don’t know.  Can we choose to feel inadequate looking at images like that?  Probably.  What I am grateful for, however, is that at least my working life doesn’t look like the picture I’ve put up here. Except I do think I have more Post It notes than she has and I often feel like crawling under my desk with my iPhone when I’ve got too much to do.
